It’s that time again…

We have been rather uninspired in the kitchen as of late- and have been sticking with our tried and true recipes. I’m quite certain that nothing will ever beat my love affair with the Baked Oatmeal I shared awhile back, I make it at least once a week!  But I did managed to try a few new dishes that I’m excited to share.

Most recently we tried Spicy Sausage Pasta

Spicy Sausage Pasta

It was great. Admittedly I didn’t have all the ingredients on hand, I subbed out heavy cream for milk and cream cheese, and I used rotini instead of penne. I’m looking forward to trying it again the way it was intended.

We love Tilapia. It’s light and non-fishy- and so easy to prepare. This Rachel Ray recipe makes it a snap.

This soup reminds me of the potato soup at Cotton Patch. Zoe had been asking for this warm comfort soup for awhile so on our last cool day we threw the ingredients in the crockpot before church and enjoyed it when we got home.

It has been warming up around here, and the change of seasons always gets me thinking of my wardrobe {or lack there of…sigh} A friend recently introduced me to this cute little vest made from a scarf. Just think of all the endless possibilities!

Large Transfer picture…The Almost Disaster Craft Project

Our bedroom has been in serious need of a makeover for awhile, it is the most neglected room in the house; overrun with laundry, children’s toys, papers and other junk. I resolved to change that this year. I started with new bedding, a chair cover, and a new headboard- all of which made a world of difference, but the walls were still bare. I scoured Pinterest for ideas and then I remembered this great  project a friend of mine did. It was perfect! She made it look so easy, as it turns out…she is a liar. Just kidding. But she is obviously way more talented and craft savvy then I am.

I started with this picture

Cute right?

Then off to Staples I went. I asked them to blow this picture up to an engineer size. They do it in black and white for super cheap…for like $2 or something like that. Only I was told that if I want that cheap price I needed to bring the picture in on a digital copy, otherwise it is around $5-6. (sorry my memory is fuzzy) Only I pouted a little and the nice lady said she would let me off the hook this time.

Hobby Lobby was next on my list for the Gel Medium. Since I didn’t take note of what kind to buy- I just grabbed one. This might have been where I went wrong. {who knows}

I also grabbed a large canvas.

I will let you read the step by step directions from here, or here.  They will do a much better job explaining the process, and even sound happy about it ; )

But basically I spent hours. Yes hours, people. Rubbing. Spraying. Rubbing. More spraying and rubbing. I even got Steven in on the action. And although I am pleased with the final project and I LOVE the way it looks above our bed, I will probably never attempt it again, at least not on this scale.

I love the old time, rough around the edges, distressed look, but I had a hard time controlling where the paper was coming off- which is one of the reasons that made this project stressful. I ended up with a big line right down my face, but even with that, I still love it.

So here is the final project in all it’s glory.

And here is what it looks like above our bed. I want to do some smaller squared black and white pictures of us next to it- something fun,  but that’s another project for another day!

I’m sharing this with Mom On Time Out

Sadly I haven’t had much time to devote to my “Pinterest obsession” this past week, so I pulled from a few things that I have done in the recent past that haven’t made it to this page yet.

Amazing Chicken Parmesan Meatballs

Well, I can’t say they were amazing, but we did enjoy them. If I find another great sale on ground chicken then we will probably make these again.

Saltine Toffee

Saltine Toffee: I have to make this

Admittedly, the first time I made these- I bombed them. I only had club crackers- and they really do need saltine crackers. I have had them twice since then and they are really good. And with only 4 ingredients- they come together super quick. They would be really great if you need a last minute dessert.

Mason jar cupcakes

This was a cute little project that we did for Zoe’s birthday. It was a little messy but turned out cute. That frosting on top…it’s caulking! This site has lot’s a cute little fun crafts using mason jars.

Here is the cupcake craft in action.

Have you tried anything great off of Pinterest this week?

The holidays definitely kept me busy on Pinterest. I wasted tons a little bit of time sifting through great recipes and cute little craft projects. I even managed to do more than just “pin” a few of those recipes and crafts. Here are some of my favorites.

Baked Oatmeal Casserole

People, This is AhhhhhMaaaZing. I absolutely love this breakfast dish. I don’t even like oatmeal normally, but this is just so good. I buy the bag of  frozen berries with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries and  I also use whatever nuts I have on hand. I make this at least once a week!

Southwestern Egg Rolls

I have never had Chili’s Southwestern Egg rolls, but a few of my gal pals swear these are just as tasty if not more so. I did change it up just a bit, because it’s a forgiving recipe. I  added fresh cilantro, and because my guy doesn’t believe anything is a meal unless there is meat- I also added chicken. Oh, and because I’m occasionally lazy I mashed up an avocado and some ranch  dressing for the dip. It’s a meal that comes together rather quickly. I especially love that there is no need to fry the egg rolls.

Christmas Crack

We have officially sworn off all junk food in our house {at least that’s what we tell ourselves.} But I did make this right before Christmas for our children’s Awana’s leaders. And I might have made a bit too much, and I might have eaten most of the extra all by myself. I see why it’s referred to as “crack” it’s seriously addictive. But with 3 sticks of butter…how can you go wrong?

Picture Frame

I saw this picture frame on my Sister In Law’s board.  It looked easy enough to put together, And because {ahem, she is such a hard person to buy for} Sorry Dena. I thought “Why not?” so off to Hobby Lobby I went to gather my materials. There was no website that I could find for directions so I pretty much just Forest Gumped my way through it. How hard could it be right? Actually it wasn’t hard I just wish I could have been warned about how long it would take to wrap that yarn around the frame. Let’s just say I watched a movie or two. Here is how mine turned out.

It’s been a while since I have regaled you with my Pinterest experiments. Mostly because now that the school year is in full swing I have a lot less time to spend gawking over all the wonderful ideas and recipes that are pinned, and even less time to actually try them.

Here are a few things that have recently piqued my interest.

cake mix waffles

Cake Mix Waffles

Ok, I couldn’t actually make these the way the directions said. I just couldn’t bare to feed my children cake in the morning and call it breakfast. Sorry kids. BUT… I did buy a spice cake mix, and used half of it mixed with my own whole wheat, homemade waffle mix so that I can feel a little better about serving it in the morning!

spice waffles

This is how mine turned out. They are quite tasty. And as for the icing…nope. Couldn’t do it either. We topped these bad puppies with real maple syrup and bananas.

In fairness…I would totally eat up the original recipe as a dessert!

I saw these scrumptious cookies on Pinterest just the other day and I knew Steven was going to go bananas over them! I was right.

pretzel cookie

Pretzel Cookies

They are not as heavy as our usual chocolate chip cookie recipe and the added crunchiness and salt of the pretzel makes it extra good. They didn’t stick around for long.

And because life just wouldn’t be as fun without some kind of craft, I recently whipped up this little fabric flower. This was on a friend of mines blog and the moment I saw it I knew I was going to have to make it. This crafty gal has the cutest little girl who is always sporting the sweetest little hair accessories. I’m glad she shared her secret.

DIY Glass Art, a Memo Board and some Pinterest Love

Today I’m showcasing some of the other crafts that were done at craft night by one of my gal pals Rebekah.

wipe off board with burlap

This cute memo board was made by spray painting a picture frame white and placing a piece of burlap behind the glass. Love this! I can’t wait to make one of these for myself sometime soon.

painted bowl

painted glass

This painted glass project turned out lovely! Other than having to do touch ups on it a few times it was a very easy project. Rebekah didn’t do nearly the amount of steps that are shown on the original site and regular craft store paint did the job. She found all those great glass pieces at Goodwill!

And on to the food….

coconut cream pie

This past week we made this delicious Coconut Cream Pie it’s not the traditional coconut cream pie which is great for me because I’m not that big of a fan of coconut. Since I haven’t been eating sugar I only took one bite, but it was delicious. We will definitely make it again.

mini chicken potpies

I served these mini potpies to the kiddos for lunch this week. They were quick and easy and I felt good about serving them something hot and filling for lunch.

And hey, although not professional by far…only the last picture is not my own Winking smile

Has anyone else come across anything great on Pinterest?

A DIY Headband holder and some Pinterest Love

Oh, how I do love summer. {have I mentioned that before?} I can enjoy not being a slave to schedules and activities, I can sit around be productive in ways that I don’t have time to be during the school year. Surprisingly, although it has been hot, it hasn’t been nearly as miserable as last summer. Last year at this time we were working on beating the record for the most 100 degree consecutive days. I think we missed it by one or two!

All that to say I have been much more motivated to work on little projects here and there. I managed to clean out the girls room, and that was a PRO-JECT! I was determined to make it more efficient and give a place for every thing…and everything a place {I feel like saying that in a Mary Poppins voice, for some reason} It has long been out of control.

One of the projects I made at craft night was a head band holder to help control all those unruly hair accessories that were taking up space in their room. It’s working beautifully.

DIY headband holder

headband holder

All I needed was an empty oatmeal container, some cute fabric, and a glue gun. It took less than 10 minutes! I especially love that I can hide all those little pony tail holders inside.

And just to be sure I don’t neglect Pinterest, Here are a few things we have enjoyed of late.

cookie dough dip

This is Cookie Dough Dip, and I swear it’s so addicting. It was brought to craft night and although I restrained myself, I think if I was left in a dark room alone, I would have licked the bowl clean.

no bake energy bites

I made these energy bites, and they too were really good, and very easy. They only took me about 5 minutes to throw together. I almost hate that I’m posting them though, because I changed up several of the ingredients, just to use what I had on hand, and Steven suggested adding crushed up pretzels, which I think made them even better.
And Last but not least…

Taco Pizza

Taco Pizza. We have been slacking in our Friday Night Pizza nights, so when we saw this pizza we knew we had to try it. If you love tacos, and pizza then it’s a winner. If you use a store bought pizza crust, and canned refried beans it will come together in a snap! Bonus: we usually have most of the ingredients on hand. It is easy and filling.

Again, the Pinterest pictures are not my own, which is clearly noticed by mere observation Winking smile
